The Bay Area Urban Areas Security Initiative

Community Preparedness & Resilience

The Bay Area UASI established a Community Preparedness Focus Group in 2023 to amplify community voices, advocate priority preparedness initiatives, and collaboratively customize UASI and RCPGP investments to build community resilience. The Community Preparedness and Resilience focus group lies within the Bay Area UASI Emergency Management Work Group (EMWG) which coordinates and builds regional capabilities to enhance community preparedness and resilience; and to enhance all-hazards incident planning, response, and recovery capabilities.

Focus Group Objectives

  • Identify vulnerable populations and underserved communities in each member jurisdiction via tools such as the Justice40 Initiative’s Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CJEST).
  • Support regional collaboration to improve community focused/inclusive planning, preparedness, and recovery capabilities within the Bay Area.
  • Provide a mechanism for sharing community preparedness and resilience best practices and staying informed of current lessons learned, policies, and protocols across local, state, and federal partners.
  • Identify gaps in the Bay Area THIRA/SPR in relation to the disaster readiness of our community.
